Ortho-K lenses: Why Should You Consider Them For Your Kids?

Jun 7, 2022 | Eye Health

Orthokeratology lenses (or better known as Ortho-K) are contact lenses that go against everything you’ve ever been told with your regular contact lenses! Why? Because you sleep in them! Yes, you read that correctly – you sleep in your Ortho-K lenses and that is when they work their magic!

These contact lenses work to gently re-shape your eyes while you sleep, so that you can enjoy clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses! They are similar to braces, but are for your eyes! Ortho-K lenses can be customised for short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

In addition to freedom from glasses or daytime contact lenses, Ortho-k also slows down the progression of short-sightedness (myopia) so that your prescription can stay as low as possible. This is important because the main cause of a stronger prescription comes from the length of the eye stretching longer. The longer the eye, the higher the risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma, retinal detachment and myopic macular degeneration.

Ortho-k is also a great alternative for daytime contact lenses. It is beneficial for people who:

  • Play sports
  • Have dry eyes with regular contact lenses
  • Work in dusty environment

After wearing Ortho-k overnight, the vision improvement can be seen the next morning. This effect lasts about 1 day, so the best results are achieved when they are worn every night. The reversible process means that Ortho-k is a non-surgical alternative to laser eye surgery.
